  18. <p>     God will decide who succeeds Mother Teresa as head of the
  19. Missionaries of Charity--though the Vatican will certainly
  20. have a say. The revered sister, now 79, last week stepped aside
  21. for health reasons after serving 40 years as superior-general
  22. of the order she founded. When asked who would take her place,
  23. she lifted her hand toward heaven and said, "We will act the way
  24. he leads us." Known as the "saint of the gutters" for her work
  25. among the poor and sick of Calcutta, she won the Nobel Prize for
  26. Peace in 1979 and traveled ceaselessly in support of her
  27. mission. Since a heart attack last year, however, she rarely
  28. leaves her Calcutta home.
