- <p> God will decide who succeeds Mother Teresa as head of the
- Missionaries of Charity--though the Vatican will certainly
- have a say. The revered sister, now 79, last week stepped aside
- for health reasons after serving 40 years as superior-general
- of the order she founded. When asked who would take her place,
- she lifted her hand toward heaven and said, "We will act the way
- he leads us." Known as the "saint of the gutters" for her work
- among the poor and sick of Calcutta, she won the Nobel Prize for
- Peace in 1979 and traveled ceaselessly in support of her
- mission. Since a heart attack last year, however, she rarely
- leaves her Calcutta home.
